Time to Head Back Home

All good things must come to an end and for us, the time has come to return to Ohio.

We had intended this year to stay in Texas until the first part of may, but with the current state of the economy and business commitments, we are forced to cut back early and head back to our stationary home. We are both disappointed with this turn of events, but with the way things have been going in the business world and an economy on very shaky ground, we realize the best thing we can do at this point is return. I have to consider us lucky as many people are losing their homes and jobs, so we do feel fortunate to have something to return to.

I just flew back to Texas after taking care of some problems for a client back in Ohio, but these issues are going to take much more time to get under control than just a few days as I had hoped. So, we will have to drive the rig back and plan on spending some time back in the office much earlier than we had hoped for.

My wife had done very well while I was gone and had started preparing for our travels back before I arrived at the airport. Just about everything is stowed away and we will be able to get going within a day if all goes well.

I really do not like the thought of traveling from Texas to Ohio in the motorhome at this time of year, primarily because the weather is such a factor in the spring. Last year, we went back north a little too early and found that we had a major problem trying to get back due to tornadoes and flooding.

Traveling through Arkansas last year, we narrowly missed a tornado that hit Benton a few hours after we left the RV Park there. I have to credit my wife with that decision as she keeps a close eye on the weather forecasts, and that saved us from some serious damage. As we traveled through Missouri, we were stopped at a couple of places due to flooding, which delayed our return by a couple of days.

The flooding problem plagued us through Kentucky and we reached Ohio with no damage to our rig and everything intact except for our blood pressures!

So here we are, preparing to head back along the same path as last year, hoping that since we are returning a bit earlier than last year that we will be able to stay ahead of the bad weather.

I normally am relaxed when driving the motorhome, but honestly, this time I am looking at the situation with a certain amount of nervousness. I have no problem driving a car or pickup truck in bad weather, but driving a 9-ton vehicle with the aerodynamics of a cinder block through high winds does not excite me at all. I'm comforted with the fact that my wife will be checking the weather as we go along and I trust her judgement. Under normal circumstances when we travel, we are not under any time constraints and can go along as a leisurely pace. Not so this time, as I have a series of meetings and commitments upon my return, so getting back on time is a major factor on this trip.

If there is one thing in life that is true, it doesn't matter if you are living the RV lifestyle or in a permanent home, things are always going to change. We hope that everything goes well and everyone in the RV lifestyle has safe travels.
